Ellen Gunning author of Capital Women of Influence

Every now and then we all need a boost and last night I got one! I went to hear Ellen Gunning speak. She talked about Irish women who have made a huge impact on the lives of others. What marked them out most obviously from “the herd” was their passion, but that was only matched by their courage. No matter what obstacles they faced, they didn’t give up. Instead of giving up they looked around until they found another way to reach their goals.

This is something we all need to do when the going gets tough. We all need a reminder to look for another way to reach our goals. So today, if you feel overwhelmed and think you will never reach your goal; take the weekend off, come back refreshed on Monday and FIND ANOTHER WAY!

What words say Happiness to you?

For me the word has to be FULFILLED. Even the sound of the word is expansive and joyful to my ears!

I enjoy my work so much. I feel fulfilled in it. Seeing people leave sessions with bright eyes, big smiles and a lighter step does it for me every time.

What gives you a “buzz”? What makes you smile or lightens your step? Take the time to figure it out and then make sure you do that thing, every day if you can.

Right now I’m happy…..

When life gives us something enjoyable we can relax into that moment or that time. We can refuse to think about what is lost and gone or what might happen in the future. What to do when you find what makes you miserable!

Well first, take a deep breath. Next know that help is at hand. A wise person whose name I cannot remember came up with a formula. (Don’t you just love those?)

DO IT!
DELAY IT!
DELEGATE IT!

or
DUMP IT!

So the key is MAKE A DECISION! Is it something you must do, even though you don’t like it? Going to the dentist is an obvious one.
Is it something that can wait, like doing your tax returns? (As long as it is not year end.)
Is it something you can delegate? (Get a local kid to mow the lawn so you don’t have to!)
or
Is it something that you no-longer want to do that adds nothing to the quality of your life?

When you are “in the flow”……

When you are completely absorbed in a task,” in the flow”, deeply involved, concentrating so much that you do not notice the radio, the traffic or any other noise around you… then you are happy.

It really is true that happiness comes when we are REALLY enjoying what we are doing.

Make sure you do at least one thing today that you really, really, really enjoy….

What makes you really happy?

Make a list of the things that make you really happy! What aspects of your family life do you really enjoy? What parts of your job do you look forward to? What “tidy up” things do you need to do in your life that would make you feel great if you got them out of the way? Which friends do you consistently feel good with? What hobbies/sports are enjoyable to you? What is the one thing you could do every day that would give you a boost?

Now you know what I am going to say…….. just DO IT!!!!!!

Can we be happy every minute of every day?

Can we be happy every minute of every day? My answer to that is No! Are you surprised? Maybe you disagree with me… Before you rush to answer, here is why I think we can’t be happy all the time.

All of us experience bereavement at some time in our lives.

Some of us become ill in spite of our best efforts to be healthy.

Sometimes through economic neccessity we must work at jobs which do not fulfill us. (Until we can find a more suitable job)

Sometimes relationships fail because it takes two people to make a relationship work.

In our lives there are many seasons. When we come through a season of sadness or grief, if we look closely we can see the beginning of new growth just like the snowdrops pushing their heads up through the snow. It may take a while but happiness can be ours again in those little moments. And as time passes, in bigger ones as well.

Todays song is one about a woman who has questions about  her relationship. It is dedicated to those of you who have spoken to me about your relationships in recent times. I know that you have the answer inside your heart and mind. Take courage…you are not alone.
